What are you having for dinner tonight? For a question you ask yourself 365 times a year, it’s harder than it should be – the answer determined by a complex equation involving the food in your fridge, the hours in your evening and the energy in your tank. Is it any wonder that when any one of these is running low, it’s all too tempting to outsource the task of feeding yourself to those lovely people at the local takeaway, or your old friend, the microwave?
But what if I told you it doesn't have to be this way, that you could reach for a healthy, homemade meal even on the days when cooking is as appealing as sorting out your utensil drawer? I’m talking, of course, about meal prep.
If you’ve filed away this particular wellness trend in the folder marked 'things other people do’, I urge you to reconsider - and for reasons beyond the frequency with which Deliveroo features on your bank statements.
Planning and prepping your meals in advance is associated with good nutrition, with studies showing that those who do it are more likely to have a higher quality diet, eat a good variety of foods and be a healthy weight.
And yet, what turned meal prep from aspirational goal to weekly habit for me wasn’t the impact it had on my plate, but what it did for my mind. The truth is, taking the time to plan and prep your meals feels good. It's a form of a self-care; a statement of intent about the kind of week you want to have; a way of looking out for your future self by freeing up some time and headspace for the days when both are in short supply.
So it's with your nutrition and your emotional wellbeing in mind that we’ve compiled the WH Meal Prep Manual. In the first half of this hook, you’ll find inspiration for make-ahead breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks and drinks, alongside expert advice on everything from the foods to stock your hidge with to how to keep a bunch of herbs alive for more than a week. (Yes, it can be done.) In the second half of the book, you’ll find journal pages where you can plan your meals for the week ahead and note down the ingredients you’ll need to buy.
Of course, like your fitness regimen and your sleep schedule, meal prep is personal. For me, it’s taking a few hours on a Sunday to make a big batch of soup for my weekday lunches, along with a stew to eat on the evenings when I know I won’t have time to cook. For you, it might be prepping a protein shake to take to the gym or making your breakfasts in advance so you can eat them at your desk. Whatever works for you, I hope this book helps you make meal prep a habit, and that the next time someone asks you what you’re having for dinner, the question is a little easier to answer.
