We sneak in quietly—so quietly that not even a blueberry twig should snap beneath our boots. I’m on an island in Lake Saimaa with friends, and we’re on our way to witness one of nature’s rarities. The island has a high cliff, and below it, in a cave-like crevice, lives a Saimaa ringed seal.
We settle on a mossy patch and peer downward. And oh, what joy when the seal decides to make a brief appearance!
After a graceful loop, it dives back into its safe haven. It almost looked like it smiled at the end!
Finland’s most renowned graphic designer, Erik Bruun, has immortalized the Finnish soulscape in his works — from Jaffa sodas and Hyvon underwear to the stunning wonders of our nature, like owls and bears. Yet his most iconic piece is undoubtedly the seal poster. It was created in the 1970s when Bruun became concerned about the declining seal population. Today, the situation has improved, but this wouldn’t have been possible without the tireless efforts of conservationists.
As a tribute to their work, the well-known smile of the Saimaa seal also appears in the designs of this magazine’s
Norppa shirt and socks.
Beloved Patterns brings the classic posters of Erik Bruun into beautiful new knits! This stunning 124-page craft magazine features skillfully designed knitting patterns inspired by Bruun’s well-known commercial illustrations, nature themes, and city posters. Iconic works like Norppa, Jaffa, and Helsinki are reimagined as gorgeous knitwear.
Designers Heli Hottinen-Puukko, Janita Koskinen, Jenna Kostet, Hannemari Lehtonen, Terri Maue, Tiia Reho, Mia Sumell, Emma Suominen, and Anna-Karoliina Tetri have drawn inspiration from Bruun’s rich visual world and created their own interpretations.
